Lameness...The Pony Box...and Other Various Interests

Sorry I have been MIA lately! I'm back. And it's raining. And I thought what a lovely time to write :)

I went home last weekend to discover Lily was off. (Really hoping this one doesn't last two years ;) If you do not already know, Lily suffered two years ago from a tarsal sheath swelling in her hock, causing lameness in her right hind. Anyways, it appears Lily is a tad bit off- but good news- it is much better than the last time around. Plus, she seemed quite happy that when I came it wasn't to ride her- but instead to go out grazing on the late summer pasture!

She has an appointment with Dr. Grant on Monday- so pray for a good prognosis/recovery. (I'll explain the exact injury then-once we know for sure.)
More than likely, Lily will need to take the winter off and spend some quality time in her stall.
But that's okay, as long as my baby gets better!

So with this news...I thought about writing a little spiel about lameness!

So click on this link, and see if you can get it right!!
Can You Guess Which Leg is Lame??

Did you get it correct? I did. (and was proud!) It is really important that as horse owners we can detect the difference between lameness, "off-ness" and stiffness. Practice learning what a lame horse looks and feels like.

Here are videos from 2 years ago. Lily Trotting

Can you tell which leg she is off on?

And I know it's not fun to have a lame horse...but in the meantime- practice bonding! Make it a positive experience-
Groundwork, Grazing, Horsemanship, Tricks, Grooming, Cleaning Tack...there's still lots to do.
Ride other horses- if possible- I'll be riding my boyfriend's "Fat Boys" in the meantime while Lily recovers...they can certainly use the work!
And of course- READ! Learn about their injury...or other equine things! I love to follow Denny Emerson/Tamarack Hill Farm on Facebook. Like my trainer says, "If there was only one horse Facebook feed to read it would be his!" Seriously. It is an amazing read!

First ISHA Show Tomorrow!

It's my first year in college and I'm new to this whole ISHA thing ;) So let's see how it goes.

Tomorrow is our first show. We can only have 1 rider per division (and there are five divisions) Which leaves 31 of us horse-show-riding-less. Which isn't a bad thing. I get to see how it all works before the stress of actually competing.

I rode a big lovely mare named Mary today. She is a gorgeous bay warmblood and an excellent mover and jumper- She went to national competitions in her younger years! She was a blast to ride.

Today, I ordered Lily's Ogilvy Equestrian jumper half pad. SO FRIGGEN EXCITED. And two Bonnets By Beth. And a super cute red/navy (of course) argyle fleece sheet, so she can be all cozy this winter!

I am also trying out this thing called The Pony Box. I'll let you all know how it goes. It seems pretty exciting. Basically each month (or whenever you choose) you let them know what your horse is like, you choose some colors and products to try and they create a MYSTERY, SURPRISE, FUN box tailored to each equine! Super cool! :D

xoxo,

P.S. here is the stylish Mary~

Just a girl with a horse.

I'm just a college student with a horse. [who additionally enjoys writing].

I have created this blog to share my wonderful adventures with equines- especially those of my mare, Lily!

Lily is very special to me. I have owned her for four 1/2 years and love her to pieces. Currently I am leasing her out to my trainer and clients back home- so I miss her dearly!

Yes, I am riding in college. I am a member of the Novice Over Fences and Flat ISHA team at Roger Williams University riding for Glen Farm. I ride polo ponies and fancy jumpers!

I plan on posting my experiences, stories & tips and more here on A Mare Called Lily as well as...

* Equine Fitness
* Crafts
* Products
* Professional Tips
* Pony Humour, Facts, & Fun!

XOXO, DJC

P.S. Happy Breast Cancer Awareness Month. [Love PINK, wear PINK]
